Resignation is a closed chapter: Chidambaram

Chennai: A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rejected Home Minister P Chidambaram's resignation offer over the Naxal attack, Chidambaram has said that the chapter is closed now. (Read: Home Minister offered to resign after Dantewada attack: Sources)

"Resignation was indeed tendered. Resignation was turned down and now the chapter is closed," said Chidambaram.

Chidambaram said on Saturday that something went very badly wrong. He added that let inquiry report come and then we will see. (Read: Chidambaram on Naxal attack: Something went very wrong)

The Home minister also clarified why he said the buck stops with him. "This tragedy happened under my charge. It happened on my watch. That is why I said buck stops with me." (Read & watch: Chidambaram: Buck stops with me, take full responsibility)

However, he said that that does not mean state government does not have a role. They have a role and I believe they fully recognise it.

At a function on Friday to honour Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans Chidambaram said he accepts "full responsibility" for India's worst-ever Naxal attack on Monday, in which 76 jawans were killed in Chhattisgarh. (Read: 76 security men killed by Naxals in Chhattisgarh)

Addressing the media on Friday, Senior Congress Leader, Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "If the Home Minister has taken responsibility, it is commendable although his resignation will not be accepted."

On Friday Chidambaram said: "I have been asked directly but not indirectly where does the buck stop for what happened in Dantewada. There is no hesitation in saying that the buck stops at my desk. I accept full responsibility for what happened in Dantewada."
