"Resignation was indeed tendered. Resignation was turned down and now the chapter is closed," said Chidambaram.

The Home minister also clarified why he said the buck stops with him. "This tragedy happened under my charge. It happened on my watch. That is why I said buck stops with me." (Read & watch: Chidambaram: Buck stops with me, take full responsibility)
However, he said that that does not mean state government does not have a role. They have a role and I believe they fully recognise it.
At a function on Friday to honour Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans Chidambaram said he accepts "full responsibility" for India's worst-ever Naxal attack on Monday, in which 76 jawans were killed in Chhattisgarh. (Read: 76 security men killed by Naxals in Chhattisgarh)

On Friday Chidambaram said: "I have been asked directly but not indirectly where does the buck stop for what happened in Dantewada. There is no hesitation in saying that the buck stops at my desk. I accept full responsibility for what happened in Dantewada."
