Mamata Banerjee has said her government will approach High Court and seek capital punishment for RG Kar rape-murder case convict. 

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the common people of Bengal are disappointed by the RG Kar rape-murder case as they expected the "strictest punishment for the accused". 

"We saw that only one accused was punished, so this decision of the court is not as per the expectations of the common people," he said.

BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat reacting to the court granting life term to RG Kar rape-murder case accused said, "The big question is on what basis the court took a decision. In such a case, it is the state government's job to present the facts strongly. The state government should take this case forward and ensure the death penalty to the convict."

Former National Commission for Women chief and Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma on Monday strongly criticised the West Bengal government over the verdict of the RG Kar rape-murder case. "I firmly believe that the Mamata government was completely involved in this case. Had they not been, the outcome would have been entirely different," she said.

Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, was granted life imprisonment in the case.

After RG Kar rape-murder case convict got life imprisonment, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called for a deeper investigation.

"We wanted the highest punishment (for the convict Sanjay Roy). Being an elected representative, I can't say anything against the court verdict. The public of West Bengal does not believe that only one person is involved in the RG Kar rape-murder case. I think there should be more depth in this, as Sanjay is saying that there were also police and other people involved," the BJP leader said.

Kolkata Police would have ensured death penalty for the convict in RG Kar rape and murder case, but the probe was taken away and handed over to the CBI, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said today

 The parents of the medic who was raped and killed while she was on duty at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital said they were "shocked" by the judgment, adding they would approach the higher court seeking justice.

"How is this not the rarest of rare cases? An on-duty doctor was raped and murdered. We are dismayed. There was a larger conspiracy behind this crime," the mother told PTI.

The parents of the 34-year-old doctor raped and killed at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata last year said they do not want any compensation after a city court asked the West Bengal government to pay a sum of Rs 17 lakh to the couple who lost their daughter.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed discontent over the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case and said, "We had demanded capital punishment for the accused. We have ensured the death penalty in cases where the state conducted the trial. The case was taken away from us and given to CBI."

BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya said the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case judgment is the "manifestation of the mood of the people of the country and of West Bengal".

The court has directed the state to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim's family.

Anirban Das, the Additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court said the case is "not in the rarest of rare" category, opposing the CBI lawyer.

The CBI, which was probing the case, said it comes under the "rarest of rare" category and the maximum punishment, which is the death penalty, should be awarded to Roy to "maintain people's faith in society".

A local court in Kolkata has sentenced Sanjay Roy, the RG Kar rape-murder convict, to life in jail.

The sentence for the RG Kar rape and murder convict to be pronounced shortly as the court has resumed proceedings.

Sanjay Roy, who has been convicted in the rape-murder case of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, reiterated in court this afternoon that he was innocent and had been framed in the chilling case.

"We pray for highest penalty to maintain people's faith in society," the CBI lawyer tells court ahead of sentencing in the RG Kar rape-murder case.

"There is a category of cases where death penalty can be given. It’s the rarest of rare category. The doctor was there at a government hospital to help patients. This falls into the rarest of rare category," the prosecution tells court.

"She was meritorious student. In her death, it is a loss for society," it adds.

"I have not done anything, still, I have been held guilty," Sanjay Roy tells Sealdah court.

“It was proven you raped and killed victim. Now I want to know your views on punishment," Judge Anirban Das to Sanjay Roy.

"I haven't done this. I have been framed," Sanjay Roy tells court during the sentencing.  

"I heard lots of things were destroyeed. You decide whether I have been framed or not," he adds.

Judge Anirban Das and the Kolkata rape-murder convict are now in the courtroom for pronouncement of the sentence.

The victim's mother has expressed disappointment with the CBI investigation, alleging that "other perpetrators involved in the crime had not been brought to justice".

"Only one person is not involved in the crime, yet the CBI has failed to apprehend the others. Such criminals have no right to live if we are to prevent future crimes in society," she said ahead of Sanjay Roy's sentencing.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said she would not comment on Sanjay Roy's sentencing until the court delivers its judgement.

She, however, said she had earlier demanded the death penalty. "But it depends on the judge and how the case has been framed."

Sanjay Roy on Saturday told the court that he was not guilty and was "being framed". As he was being taken out, Roy said a certain "IPS" (Indian Police Service) officer "knew everything".

"One IPS knows everything, why am I not being allowed to speak? I haven't done this. Why are those who did it being allowed to go? I always wear a 'rudraksh' around my neck. If I had committed the crime, it would have broken (referring to a popular belief). What justice can I expect?" he said.

Responding to Roy, Anirban Das, the Additional District and Sessions Judge of the Sealdah court, said he would have an opportunity to speak on Monday before the sentence is pronounced.

Ahead of the sentencing, the parents of the victim doctor said they trusted the judiciary to deliver justice.

“We have faith in the judge,” the victim’s father said.

About 500 policemen have been deployed to the Sealdah court ahead of Sanjay Roy's pronouncement of the punishment.

The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital led to nationwide outrage and prolonged protests by junior doctors.

The charges under which Sanjay Roy has been convicted entail a minimum sentence of life imprisonment, while the maximum can be capital punishment, also known as the death penalty.

The 31-year-old doctor was on duty on August 8 night and was found dead the next morning. Her semi-naked body was found on the third floor of the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The incident sent shockwaves across the country and triggered nationwide protests.
The victim was referred to as 'Abhaya' (the fearless), on the lines of the 2012 Delhi rape case trial, in which the victim was named 'Nirbhaya'.

A court in Kolkata found Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old former civic police volunteer, guilty in the gruesome rape and murder case on Saturday.
