Rhea Chakraborty's arrest is a "travesty of justice", her lawyer Satish Maneshinde said today after the Narcotics Control Bureau moved in on the 28-year-old. The Central agency had questioned her thrice -- once even confronting with her arrested brother Showik Chakraborty, which, sources said, left her in tears.
Sources in the Narcotics Control Bureau said she has admitted to procuring drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput, whose death on June 14 triggered a furore, eventually leading to investigations by multiple Central agencies.
Mr Manshinde expressed outrage saying three Central agencies were "hounding a single woman just because she was in love with a drug addict who was suffering from mental health issues".
Rhea Chakraborty came under the Central agencies' scanner after Sushant Singh's family's allegations that she mentally harassed him, siphoned off Rs 15 crore from his bank account and had a role in his death. The actor has been vilified on social media and was mobbed when she appeared for questioning by the Narcotics Control Bureau on Sunday.
Ms Chakraborty has repeatedly said that she and her family have been subjected to a witch-hunt.
Sushant Singh Rajput, Mr Manshinde said, was "for several years under the care of five leading psychiatrists in Mumbai, and ended up committing suicide due to consumption of illegally administered medicines".
The reference to "illegally administered medicines" was to revelations from a WhatsApp conversation purportedly between Sushant Singh Rajput and one of his four sisters, where she apparently suggested the names of prescription drugs for anxiety and offered to procure a prescription for their purchase.
Sushant Singh Rajput died five days after this conversation.
Rhea Chakraborty filed a complaint against the woman, Priyanka Singh, accusing her of having a role in his suicide by making "bogus medical prescription". A police case has been filed against her.
Rhea Chakraborty, who had underscored that she was mentally prepared for arrest, appeared for questioning today in a T-shirt that read "Roses are red, violets are blue, let's smash the patriarchy, me and you.". While being taken away by the officials after her arrest, she also waved to the media, signaling her intention to fight back.
