Guwahati:: In Assam, 19 people have died and over 30 lakh affected by the floods.
The Kaziranga National Park is beleaguered not just by floods but by one of its worst attacks by poachers.
In the last 48 hours, the horns of three rhinos have been removed - two of them survived the assault. Another 16 rhinos have so far been poached this year as they tried to escape the flood water by moving towards the hills of Karbianglong. Local residents and wildlife organisations have protested against this mass killing of rhinos, holding the government responsible for failing to protect the world heritage site
When the sanctuary was first flooded in July, close to 700 animals were reported dead.
Park authorities have not yet surveyed the trail of destruction inside the park and once the water recedes, the real picture will emerge.
In Kaziranga, which has the highest density of tigers in the country, there is no report on the number of tigers killed in the flood yet. However, when a tiger is poached, its carcass is not left behind, so the discovery of a missing tiger can take much longer.
