New Delhi:
Actor Rishi Kapoor's biting tweets on roads and buildings named after the Gandhi family brought enraged Congressmen to his doorstep on Wednesday.
Congress activists protested outside Mr Kapoor's home in Mumbai's Pali Hill after a series of tweets in which the 63-year-old even commented: "'Baap ka maal samajh rakha tha?"
The tweets began in reference to Union Minister VK Singh's letter proposing that Akbar Road, a prominent tree-shaded avenue in the heart of Delhi, be renamed after Maharana Pratap, the king who fought against Mughal Emperor Akbar.
"If roads in Delhi can be changed, why not Congress assets/property?" tweeted Mr Kapoor.
The posts quickly turned into an all-out offensive.
The Congress hit back at the veteran actor. The party's Sanjay Nirupam said he had sent Mr Kapoor a list of airports in the country named after other leaders. "Some people say anything for the sake of power and due to their parochial attitude," he said.
Some on twitter sought to remind the actor what he had in common with the Gandhis.Retweeting Rishi Kapoor, BJP leader Shaina NC commented: "Akbar Road should be renamed to Maharana Pratap Marg. Imagine Hitler Road in Israel! No country honours its oppressors like we do!!"
She clarified to NDTV that she was not comparing Akbar to Hitler. "I am not dismissing the good work Akbar did but need to recognise the good work that Maharana Pratap did which has gone unnoticed."
