Thane:
CCTV footage has revealed how a brazen act of robbery at gunpoint played out in Maharashtra's Thane district on the night of March 6. The footage shows the sequence of events when the owner of a jewellery shop, Sunil Jain, and his relative, Santosh, were attacked by a gang of four men when they were downing the shutters of their shop and preparing to return home.
The video, caught on a camera at an ATM close to Mr Jain's shop, was retrieved by the police two days ago. It shows that the gang attacked the two men with choppers and guns - using them to beat Mr Jain and his relative on the head and face - and robbed them of 1 kg of jewellery that they were carrying in a bag.
Mr Jain's shop was the target of a robbery attempt a year ago, following which he reportedly started carrying the jewellery back home, which the suspects seem to have known about.
As they fled from the scene, the attackers fired twice in the air. Suresh Anuse, a guard at the ATM who witnessed the attack, says he wanted to intervene and help Mr Jain and Santosh but backed off when he saw the gang was armed with guns. The jewellers were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and are now recovering.
This footage is now being scrutinised by the police as they try to trace the suspects who are still at large.
