In Rohtak, the family of two children whose mother was gangraped and committed suicide and whose father is now in jail for that, is now fighting for their custody.
The grandparents have petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) asking them to intervene because police have put the children in an orphanage. They don't want to sign a bond as asked by the administration.
After trying for two days to get his grandchildren back, Roop Singh has now petitioned the NHRC. Nishita and Himanshu, who had been protesting outside Rohtak court for two months, demanding their father's release, were evicted by the district administration on Wednesday, and put in a child care centre in Sonepat.
The administration says the children will be given back to their grandparents if they sign an undertaking.
"They have to sign the undertaking because we want to do everything legally. If they follow all the procedures, I am ready to hand over the children to them within half-n-hour," said District Collector P C Meena.
But the family isn't willing to sign on the dotted lines.
"We have objection to the fact that they are questioning whether the grandparents will be able to take good care of them or not. How does that question arise now, when they have been taking care of the children from the very beginning?" said Shiela, children's aunt.
"I don't understand under which law and authority they are doing all this. We condemn this action on the part of the government," said Ranjan Lakhanpal, human rights lawyer.
The Singh family is adamant that they will not sign the undertaking. They have already written in to the human rights commission and are ready to take the matter to court to get their children back.
