Rousing welcome for Rita Bahuguna

Lucknow: It was a grand welcome for Rita Bahuguna Joshi in Lucknow, two days after she was released on bail.

However, the state Congress chief did not waste a moment, before taking on Mayawati. "I fear for my life. My servants could have been killed; my life is in grave danger," she said.

Upon reaching her house, which was vandalised and set on fire allegedly by BSP men she was overcome with emotion.

"This vandalism is really shocking, this is such a historic house, it belongs to the friend of my father. I am sorry for that," said Rita Joshi.

But the BSP leader accused of attacking the house was on Monday given the rank of a minister.

Lucknow  BSP chief Imtezaar Ali Abdi who was named in the Congress party's written complaint has been made chairman of the state sugar corporation. This, on a day the police found more evidence of the BSP's involvement in the violence. The vehicle that was used to ferry attackers to Rita's house was recovered.

Another accused in the case defended Abdi's elevation - BSP leader Kabban Nawab.

These developments raise concerns about a fair probe into the incident. But for now Joshi's concerns are more immediate as she braces for a meeting with Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday.
