West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya spoke on the floor of the state Assembly on Thursday about the steps taken by the state government in connection with the Rouvanjit Rawla case.
Speaking in the Assembly, Buddhadeb said that a report has been submitted to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights on the matter and added that specific instructions would be given to teachers.
The Chief Minister also said that the state's education department is formulating these new rules.
Assembly Speaker H A Halim had directed the Chief Minister to make a statement in the House on the steps taken in connection with the alleged suicide case.
Thirteen-year-old Rouvanjit, a student of Kolkata's prestigious La Martiniere school, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his home after being caned by the school principal on February 12, according to a complaint lodged with the police by his father, Ajoy Rawla.
The charges are being investigated by the Kolkata Police and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
The state government had earlier announced that it was planning to set up an appropriate body to deal with corporal punishment in schools.
