RSS Gives A Thumbs Down On Banning Women In Temples

Senior RSS functionary Suresh Joshi said the Sangh believes there should be a discussion on the issue so the "unfair practice" is discontinued.

Nagaur, Rajasthan: In what could be seen an attempt at an image makeover, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh or RSS, the ideological mentor of the BJP, has advocated for women entry into temples, calling the practice of banning them from the sanctum sanctorum of some temples as 'unfair'.

Senior RSS functionary Suresh Joshi, while addressing the media here on Sunday, said the Sangh believes that there should be a debate and discussion on the issue so the "unfair practice" is discontinued.

The issue also found a mention in the annual report submitted by at the meet by Mr Joshi.

Lately there have been agitations by women's groups, spearheaded by Bhoomata Brigade, which had demanded that women be allowed to enter areas in which they have been traditionally banned in key temples across India, including the Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahmednagar and Trimbakeshwar temple in Nashik.

While holding some social elements "inimical to the well-being of the society" for raising this "unsavoury controversy", the RSS annual report observed that this issue could only be resolved through discussion and dialogue and not through agitation.

Accepting that both men and women were allowed entry into the temples in the past and that due to some "unfair traditions" there was discrimination against women, the RSS advocated taking recourse to changing mindsets through proper discussions.

Warning against politicisation of such issues, the RSS advised the concerned parties to launch efforts to bring about changes in mindset at every level through joint efforts of social and religious leadership and temple administration.

The three-day meet of the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, the highest decision making body of the RSS, ended on Sunday with the adoption of three resolutions. The Sabha passed a resolution on affordable education, healthcare and social harmony.
