Bhopal: There have been protests across cities in Madhya Pradesh against a sharp rise in crimes. The crime graph in the state has been alarming.

In 2006, Madhya Pradesh there were 1,94,104 cases of crime. In 2007, it was 2,02,379. In 2008, the numbers went upto 2,06,626 cases.

But perhaps what is most shameful is that three out of every ten policemen in the state face a charge.

Revelations of an RTI application confirmed the worst. Too much political interference has meant little accountability amongst officers and a sharp rise in crime.

Last year, 10 officers were transferred by politicians against wishes of the Police Establishment Board; 555 junior policemen were given postings on political requests.

"Before an FIR is registered, a particular officer would like to contact that political boss who got him posted there. So it obviously affecting law and order," said S C Tripathy, Former DGP, Madhya Pradesh.

Ajay Dubey, RTI activist and Coordinator, NGO Prayatan, wanted to get to the heart of the matter. And what he has uncovered has become a landmark case in court. His zeal and activism, many are hoping will finally push the state to clean up the police force and thereby its world of crime.
