Chandigarh: The man who was once Haryana's senior-most policeman will stay in jail for molesting a teenager named Ruchika Girhotra.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed SPS Rathore's plea  challenging the 18-month jail sentence given to him by a lower court in May this year.

Rathore, 68, is currently in jail.

In December 2009, he was sentenced to six months in prison for molesting Ruchika in 1990 when she was 14 years old. National outrage led to the CBI, which is handling the case, asking for a tougher sentence for Rathore, who retired in 1992, as the Director General of the Haryana Police. A Sessions Court then sentenced him to 18 months in jail. The maximum sentence for molestation is two years.

In 1993, three years after she complained that Rathore had molested her, Ruchika killed herself.  She alleged before she died that Rathore had relentlessly persecuted her family after she filed a police case against him.
