Saharanpur Suicide case: Police order probe

Saharanpur: On one hand, when the country is talking about the Right to Education Act as a mean to transform the lives of millions of people, the shocking Saharanpur suicide case has thrown out many challenging questions.

Are we prepared for this change? After all, the Right to Education Act cannot exist in isolation. It has to fight through social prejudices which run deep in our country, prejudices which caused the 13-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh to end her life after being humiliated in school. The Saharanpur police have now ordered a probe into the suicide after allegations that the girl killed herself after being humiliated by her classmates since she was forced by the principal of the school to clean toilets to pay her fee.

"Further inquiry will be conducted into this case. With the support of people and more evidence, we will take action against those responsible for the girl's death," said the District Magistrate of Saharanpur, Alok Kumar.

The incident took place on Thursday in UP's Saharanpur district.

Not able to bear the taunts of her classmates, Laxmi, a 13 year-old girl, had committed suicide after she was allegedly forced to clean toilets in the school by the school principal.
