Lucknow: Samajwadi Party legislator Rampal Yadav was on Friday expelled from the party for his involvement in "illegal" activities and "maligning" its image, a party spokesman said.

"Rampal Yadav has been expelled from the party by state President Akhilesh Yadav for maligning its image and his involvements in illegal activities and irregularities," party spokesman Rajendra Chowdhury said.

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) had razed the Sitapur MLA Rampal Yadav's "illegal" complex on Thursday and arrested him along with eight others including his relative former legislator Rajendra Yadav for allegedly attacking the LDA team.

"The complex was demolished as it was illegal," District Magistrate Rajshekhar said.

Mr Yadav was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court after he was booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code including 307 (attempt to murder) and 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act late Friday night.

The lawmaker and his supporters yesterday clashed with police and LDA team after which police used lathicharge to disperse the mob.

Meanwhile in Sitapur, a part of the lawmaker's Sparsh Hotel, was also demolished today as it was against norms, officials said.

Mr Yadav, who is SP lawmaker from Biswan seat of Sitapur, was suspended from the party during panchayat polls after he fielded his son Jitendra Yadav for the post of district panchayat chairman against his party's official candidate. Jitendra Yadav won the election.

However, after elections, his suspension was revoked.
