New Delhi : If Sanjay Leela Bhansali wants to resume work on his film, "Padmavati" without opposition from a fringe group that assaulted him last week, its members must be allowed to review the movies before its released; the name of the movie must also be changed, said the Rajput Karni Sena, presenting new demands to the director.
The group claims that Mr Bhansali distorts historical facts about their clan. On Friday, they slapped the director and pulled his hair while he was filming at a fort in Jaipur. The violence was filmed and the video has gone viral.
The protesters, who also vandalised the set, accuse Mr Bhansali of twisting historical facts by romantically linking the Rajput queen and Alauddin Khilji, a Muslim ruler. Mr Bhansali today said that there is "no romantic dream sequence or any objectionable romantic scene" between the leaders. He said he would not comment on the new demands for the name of the movie to be changed or for it to be screened for the Rajput Karni Sena.
The Rajputs were a Hindu warrior clan that historically ruled over kingdoms in western India.
Deepika Padukone, who plays Padmavati, defended the movie on Saturday. "I can assure you that there is absolutely no distortion of history," she tweeted.
Narayan Singh, who claims to be the local leader of Karni Sena, told the Press Trust of India that the group had warned the filmmaker against presenting "wrong facts", but he stopped short of claiming responsibility for the attack.
"We gathered there and protested," he said, adding there were also others watching the filming.
"Someone from the mob slapped him and pulled his hair," he added.
Five men were initially detained over the incident but were then released on bail.
