Saradha chit fund scam: Calcutta High Court orders probe by Special Investigation Team

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court today accepted Saradha Group chief Sudipta Sen's proposal for probing all complaints into the multi-crore chit fund scam by a Special Investigation Team or SIT.

The court ruled that all cases will be tried by a special court.

The division bench of Justice A K Banerjee and Justice M K Chaudhuri also ordered the Justice (retd) Shyamal Sen Commission, set up by the West Bengal government to probe the scam, to take custody of Saradha properties and sell them for payment of dues to genuine depositors and other claimants.

Earlier, the court refused to grant the prayer for a CBI investigation into the scam but kept the matter pending before it. The West Bengal Police is currently handling the investigation.

Saradha Group chairman Sudipta Sen was arrested from Sonmarg in Kashmir on in April along with two close associates.

Mr Sen had, in an affidavit, opposed a CBI probe claiming that the state agencies were doing a good job and also prayed that all the cases filed against him in different places be clubbed and heard before a single court.
