New Delhi: Sarobjit Singh, son of National Commission of SC/ST Chairman Buta Singh, was on Friday sent to CBI custody till August 5 along with three other persons arrested in a case of alleged bribery.
Sarobjit was arrested earlier in the day along with Anup Kumar Begi, Madan Singh Solanki and Dhukh Singh Chauhan for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs one crore from a Nashik based contractor Ramrao Patil to close a case registered against him under the SC/ST Act.
They were produced before Special CBI Judge S P Hayatnagarkar who sent them to six-day CBI custody.
CBI alleged, Sarobjit and the others demanded the bribe to "influence" Buta Singh for settling the case registered against Patil.
"On July 16, Patil received a call from Begi informing him that Buta Singh wanted to meet him and had called him to Delhi," CBI said in their remand application.
When Patil reached Delhi, Begi took him to the house of Buta Singh. "Patil, Sarobjit and Begi had a meeting in the house in the presence of another person," CBI special counsel Ejaz Khan told the court. Khan, however, declined to divulge the identity of the fourth person present in the meeting.
After returning from Delhi, Patil approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau of CBI and lodged a complaint following which the agency laid a trap.
