New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Monday asked former India captain Anil Kumble's wife and her ex-husband, who are locked in a custodial battle over their daughter to try a settlement out of court.

The apex court asked Chethana Kumble and her former husband Kumar Jahagirdhar to work out a settlement on the shared custody of their 15-year-old daughter.

A Bench comprising Justices Tarun Chatterjee and R M Lodha adjourned the matter for three weeks giving them time for the purpose.

Chethana Kumble had moved the apex court challenging the Karnataka High Court order referring her child custody case to the family court.

Jahagirdar had moved the High Court seeking custody of her daughter living with Chethana and Kumble after their divorce.

After the divorce, Chethana had married Kumble and since 2004 the daughter had been living with her on the apex court's direction.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appeared for Chethana and Prashant Bhushan argued for Jahagirdar.

Jahagirdar, who also married after the divorce, has sought custody of the daughter on the ground that there has been a change of circumstance since the apex court passed the direction.

Bhushan said when the custody was granted to Chethana, she did not have any children from Anil Kumble and at that time there was also no female member in the Jahagirdar household to look after the daughter.
