New Delhi:

The Supreme Court has directed the state governments to set up committees to deal with cases of ragging.

The apex court also said that the state governments should take steps to provide treatment for victims.

In addition to these, the Supreme Court asked the state governments to take steps to deal with alcohol and drug use in colleges.

The apex court also directed the governments to make provisions for de-addiction treatment in colleges.

Reacting to the judgement, former CBI chief R K Raghavan has told NDTV that the ruling is overwhelming.

"The order is overwhelming. Colleges must be free of the drug menace. Colleges and schools have not played the right role," said Raghavan.

Aman Kachroo's father termed the ruling a historic judgement.

The Supreme Court ruling comes just days after some recent incidents of ragging.

The most recent case of ragging that came up was the brutal one reported at the Lawrence School, Sanawar, one of the country's most prestigious institutions.

Eleven students were admitted in hospital and six had perforated eardrums while one student reportedly had only 30 per cent of his hearing left.

Seven students at the boarding school in Himachal Pradesh responsible for the incident were sent back home after the incident. They were all from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab. The attack was reportedly led by a student, who is the son of a senior police officer in Punjab.
