More than a dozen school children are feared drowned after their school bus, reportedly carrying 15 students, fell into the Kalvi river in Aldona village of Goa this morning. Seven bodies have been recovered so far.
According to reports, the brakes of the bus failed following which it went out of control and fell into the Kalvi river.
A major rescue operation was initiated immediately after the mishap and fire brigade as well as police divers were rushed to the spot. Indian Navy divers are also a part of the rescue team.
Reports suggest the driver and conductor jumped out of the bus and are safe.
In the wake of the incident, Goa government has called off the customary Carnival parade to be held in Panaji and is taking a call on the similar performances to be held in other cities.
The carnival is celebrated in the coastal state for three days and nights, when the legendary King Momo takes over the state and the streets come alive with music and color.
