School van driver on cell phone, 9 children dead
Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu: A roadside pond in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district turned into a graveyard for nine young children and their teacher.

Their school van plunged into the pond, allegedly because the driver of the van was speaking on his cell phone while navigating the narrow road.

There were a total of 19 students on board, none older than seven. Those who survived are being treated at a local hospital. The government has announced compensation of Rs 50,000 for the families of those who died in the accident.
