The unrelenting summer sun scorched northern and eastern parts of the country as temperatures soared above the 40 degree celsius mark at most places.
The capital Delhi recorded a high of 42.2 degree celsius and a low of 26.2 degrees, both above the normal mark.
Uttar Pradesh sweltered with maximum temperatures upto five degree celsius above normal in several parts.
Allahabad was the hottest in the state at 46.6 degree Celsius, five degrees above normal, followed by Banda at 45.8 which was three degrees above normal, Hamirpur 45.2 and Varanasi 45.1 degrees celsius.
The Met office has forecast that there will be no respite from heat in the next 24 hours with weather likely to remain dry over all divisions of the state.
The average temperature in most parts of Jharkhand hovered around 44 degree Celsius.
Dumka, Gumla, Latehar, Lohardaga, Palamau, West Singhbhum registered a high of 44 degree Celsius each, while Koderma recorded maximum 43 degree Celsius, they said.
Heat conditions continued in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh even as there was a marginal drop in maximum temperature in some parts.
The maximum temperatures hovered around the normal level at many places of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 39.8 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal. In Punjab, Amritsar experienced a hot day at 42.4 degree Celsius, Ludhiana 41 degree Celsius and Patiala 41.5 degree Celsius, but the maximum hovered around the normal level.
Ambala, Hisar and Rohtak recorded temperatures well above 40 degree celsius.
The MeT has forecast dust storm or thunder showers with light rain at isolated places in the two states during the next couple of days.
