Hyderabad:

Two teenage boys, accused of allegedly raping a schoolgirl in Hyderabad's Jubilee Hills last week, have been taken into custody, the police said on Saturday. One of them is the son of a local leader of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's Telangana Rashtra Samithi party.

One accused, identified as Saduddin Malik, was arrested yesterday.

The 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by five young men when she was returning home after a party in the Jubilee Hills area of Hyderabad on May 28. The police have identified all five based on CCTV footage and the statement of the survivor. Three of them are minors.

The crime in the heart of the Telangana capital, allegedly involving children of politicians driving luxury cars, has triggered a massive outcry. Senior police officer Joel Davis has said that allegations that the state Home Minister's grandson is involved were untrue.

A clip from the security camera footage which has been widely shared on social media showed the girl standing with the suspects outside the pub where she had met them.

The boys had offered to drop her home. Instead, they went to a pastry and coffee shop, where they changed into an Innova. After travelling for a while, she was assaulted inside the parked vehicle in the city. They took turns raping her while the others stood guard outside.

The police initially registered a case of "outraging modesty" based on the girl's father's complaint. It was changed to a rape case later.

Ruling TRS Working President and Telangana minister KT Rama Rao on Friday requested the state's Home Minister, Director General of Police (DGP) and Hyderabad City Police Commissioner to take "immediate and stern action" in the case.

But the incident has taken a political colour, with the opposition BJP alleging the involvement of leaders from the ruling TRS and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM party and taking exception to an alleged delay in arresting the accused.

Raising slogans against the police and others, BJP members held a dharna at the Jubilee Hills police station in the city, demanding quick action.
