Selfies With Me? Sure: Akhilesh Yadav's Dig At Mayawati

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at BSP chief Mayawati -- who had cancelled the ticket of a party candidate for uploading a picture with her on Facebook -- saying in his party anyone could click a selfie with him.

"You (workers) know what happened to a candidate for uploading a picture on the social site. It is only in Samajwadi Party where you can click a selfie with me," Mr Yadav said at a programme at Janeshwar Mishra Park.

The Samajwadi Party, he added, was the "most liberal party".

On Wednesday, the BSP had cancelled the ticket of Sangeeta Chowdhury -- its candidate from Atrauli for the 2017 assembly elections -- on grounds of indiscipline. Ms Chowdhury had posted a picture on Facebook which showed her and her four children touching the feet of Mayawati. The post apparently miffed the BSP chief.

Ms Chowdhury said she would apologise to the party chief. "The motive behind uploading the picture on Facebook was not to upset Mayawatiji but to show my opponents that she is with me and I will win the elections," she said on Wednesday. Ms Chowdhury's husband, Dharmendra Chowdhury, was the candidate from Atrauli, but he was murdered in January 2015.

In an apparent dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister also said the BJP has spread "a new disease" of clicking selfies.
