Hyderabad:
It was a black day for Hyderabad's magnificent building in white. The Andhra Pradesh Assembly found one of its senior-most officers arrested for corruption.
Raids at the home of K Gopalakrishna, the Assembly's Special Secretary, provided evidence that the bureaucrat has cash and property worth 15 crores. ``This includes 3 houses, 32 plots, and agricultural lands in different districts of Andhra Pradesh including Hyderabad, Nellore, Tirupati. He is a very frequent traveller abroad so all these investigations may take time. We have also found 2 lockers and 13 bank accounts,'' said Shikha Goel of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Gopalakrishna began his career as a typist. In 2006, he became Special Secretary, which put him in charge of appointments, pensions and civil works at the Assembly. He earned a monthly salary of about Rs 65,000. So how then does he have assets worth crores?
Gopalakrishna says he is the victim of a conspiracy and claims it is all hard-earned money. ``My secretaries and some other staff have deliberately levelled these false allegations. I am not having any illegal properties. These properties are earned by my children, by me and given by my in-laws,'' he said.
