In a shocker from Punjab on New Year's Day, a senior police officer, who has also been an ace weightlifter, was found dead near a canal in Jalandhar.
The body of Dalbir Singh Deol, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, was found near the Basti Bawa Khel canal. His driving license ID and a car were recovered from the spot.
Police officials initially said that it was a hit-and-run case, but are now also probing the murder angle.
"He was found with gunshot injuries and we have launched an investigation into his death," Harvinder Singh Virk, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), said.
"An investigation has revealed that he was suffering from depression for the past three to four months," Mr Virk added.
He said that the police are examining the CCTV footage from nearby areas and that more details would come out after the post-mortem examination.
A case of murder has been registered based on the statements of a relative of Mr Singh, the police officer said.
