Senior woman IAS officer sent to jail for five years, fined 50 lakhs

Mandla, Madhya Pradesh: A senior woman IAS officer was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment and was slapped with a fine of Rs 50 lakh by a court in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla on Friday in connection with a scam involving printing and purchasing registers worth Rs 34 lakh without inviting tenders.

The scam took place in the year 1999-2000 when IAS officer Shashi Karnavat was posted as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the District Panchayat at Mandla.

Soon after the judgement, the court ordered the police to take her to prison.

Besides Ms Karnavat, the court also sentenced five years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the district panchayat's then storekeeper, Virendra Shrivas. It also handed out five years' sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the printing press owner Rakesh Sahu, besides awarding a five years' sentence and imposing a fine of Rs 15 lakh on another owner Rajeshwari Sahu, the prosecution said.

Ms Karnavat, who is now posted as Deputy Secretary in the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, was present in the court when the sentence was pronounced.
