Seniors fined Rs 50,000 for ragging

Allahabad: They heckled freshers in the first days of college. And the reward: A 50,000 rupees fine for each.

"We received a complaints from parents that their children were ragged. I asked the warden and the assistant warden to submit a report and found the complaint to be true," said M D Tiwari, Director, IIIT, Allahabad.

These 19 senior girls of an engineering college had asked the new students to refer to them as Sir or Madam.

According to latest guidelines, that amounts to ragging.

Now, they not only have to pay the fine, they also lose any scholarships they enjoyed.

Colleges, specially engineering and medical institutes have repeatedly reported violent cases of ragging. This particular instance was not violent but the college wanted to make a statement: That not even the mildest form of ragging will be accepted.
