1 Killed, Several Hurt As Police, Protesters Clash Over Electricity In Bengal

Clashes broke out when police arrived to disperse villagers blocking National Highway 34.

Berhampore: One person was killed and at least 10 others, including six policemen, were injured after villagers demanding electricity clashed with the police on a national highway in Farakka in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.

The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Jamal Sheikh of Balida Pukur village. He was passing by the area where people blocked the highway which linked the southern and northern parts of Bengal, Superintendent of Police Mukesh said.

One officer has had to be rushed to hospital with a head injury, police said.

There was no electricity in Jhikra for the last few days and the agitated people started demonstration on NH-34 at around 9.30 am.

Policemen came to lift the blockade and a clash ensued after talks failed. They resorted to lathicharge and villagers pelted stones, the officials said.

Senior civil and police officers have reached the spot and the situation is under control, officials said.
