Port Blair: Hundreds of people have been evacuated as a severe cyclonic storm with windspeed of above 110 kmph hit Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday night.
The disaster management department of the island said that due to the cyclonic weather, hundreds of people from the areas around Hutbay, Longisland and Ranjat have been evacuated to safer places and heavy rainfall predicted in the next 48 hours.
"We have taken all precautionary measures following the cyclonic storm and people from the vulnerable areas have been shifted to safer places," Sanjay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman told PTI.
All educational institutions have been declared closed for the next two days, he said.
As the inclement weather is expected to continue for the next couple of days, a strict watch is being maintained on the situation, Mr Kumar said.
