JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav on Wednesday sought to play down the divisions within its ranks over the Women's Reservation Bill and rubbished reports of a possible split in the party on the issue.
"It is an internal matter in the party and will be sorted out soon," Yadav, one of the key opponents of the bill that was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, said.
The rift within party ranks became visible Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar came out in support of the bill a couple of days ago. The five JD(U) Rajya Sabha members voted in favour of the bill even though Yadav has been opposing it in its present form.
Commenting on reports that Kumar may form a separate party, Yadav said, "It is rubbish. There is nothing like that."
About the party's future course of action, he said, "We will continue to oppose the bill as the majority of the people in the country are against it." He, however, ruled out the possibility of introducing a no-confidence motion in the House.
Earlier in the day, JD(U) spokesman and Rajya Sabha member Shivanand Tiwari told reporters that "There could be different opinions in the party on the issue. This can happen in any party. But this would not lead to a split."
"All of us want that the party remains united. Due to unity, we won so many seats in the state in the last Lok Sabha elections. Only this unity will lead us to victory in the assembly elections," he said.
