When Shalini Armugam scored 84 per cent in her Class 12 board exams, her story touched thousands. She shared on ndtv how, while prepping for she woke up at 4 am to work in five different houses, mopping floors and washing dishes, to support her family.
Nine days later, the 17-year-old has received Rs 2.95 lakh from strangers determined to help her realize her ambition of becoming an engineer.
I'm very thankful to people for their support, and am excited that I will be able to continue my studies. I will use the money in my account to pay my College fees for the first year, remaining I will spend on my brother's bone marrow treatment," she said to NDTV on the phone from Bengaluru.
"Now we are making the commitment to support her for the educational expenses provided she secures an admission in any good government aided college," wrote PK Joseph, Director of Programs at DLF Foundation, a charitable organisation helping the underprivileged in area of education, to NDTV.
Shalini's father Armugam was disabled in an accident and does not work anymore. Her mother Vijaya, the main bread earner, has to juggle her cleaning jobs with hospital duties, while Shalini's younger brother Surya has been diagnosed with blood cancer and is in hospital.
Five years ago, Shalini moved from a Tamil -speaking school to an English-medium one with few adjustment problems. She is now waiting for her results of the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) to come in, they are expected on June 1. Candidates who qualify in the test can gain admission to Colleges on the basis of merit.
Shalini still continues to assist her mother as a domestic help "I'm still doing the same work" she told NDTV.
