A young woman, reported missing by her family after she returned to India from Canada to be with her boyfriend, was found dead in a field in Haryana on Tuesday. Neelam, 23, was shot dead in June last year, allegedly by her boyfriend Sunil, who then buried her in his field.
Her skeletal remains were found by the police in Bhiwani on Tuesday.
Sunil confessed to kidnapping Neelam and killing her, the police said. He allegedly shot her twice in the head and then buried her body in his field to hide his crime, said police officer Ravindra.
Neelam's sister Roshni had complained to the police in June last. She said that her sister had cleared her International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam and had moved to Canada for work. In January last year, Sunil allegedly lured her back to India promising to marry her, police said.
Neelam's family said they never heard from her after her return and Sunil was also missing. While the police registered a case of kidnapping, no action was allegedly taken after the complaint.
After searching for Neelam, the family met with Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij to push for action. The case was then transferred to the Crime Investigation Agency in Bhiwani. The unit arrested Sunil.
Based on Sunil's questioning in custody, the authorities dug out Neelam's skeletal remains from a 10-foot deep hole in his field. The remains have been sent for postmortem to Sonipat Civil Hospital.
Police said that Sunil had a history of crime, including over half a dozen cases related to murder and possession of illegal pistols.
