Mumbai: After audio tapes of his phone conversations took over the headlines, Peter Mukerjea, arrested for murder, said "I know about the tapes." He also claimed that he had helped his son Rahul, who shared the tapes with the CBI, in making them easy to decipher. "If I would have committed a crime I would have not helped Rahul with the transcripts," said the former media big shot.
Peter and wife Indrani have been jailed for allegedly killing Sheena Bora, her daughter from an earlier relationship, in 2012. Ms Bora was engaged to Rahul, who is Peter Mukerjea's son from his first marriage.
After Ms Bora abruptly disappeared, Rahul Mukerjea urged the police to help locate her, claiming that there was every sign that something had gone terribly wrong. The taped conversations - 20 clips - reveal him confronting Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, who repeatedly insist that they are in touch with Ms Bora and that he should "forget about it". The couple suggests that she has moved on; Indrani Mukerjea refers to another who owns a Bentley as someone Ms Bora was in frequent touch with, suggesting that she may have been involved with him.
Rahul Mukerjea, sounding anguished, often loses his temper with Peter and Indrani, accusing them of withholding or misrepresenting facts. At different points, they all apologize to each other.
In 2015, Ms Bora's body was found charred in a forest near Mumbai. The police says that she had been abducted by her mother, her driver, and Indrani Mukerjea's first husband, Sanjeev Khanna. Peter Mukerjea has claimed he was not aware of the alleged conspiracy or murder.
But on the tapes, he is heard insisting that he has heard from Ms Bora, several months after she had been killed.
