Sheetal Mafatlal, a socialite and president of Mafatlal Luxury who was arrested on Monday for allegedly carrying undisclosed jewellery and diamonds worth several lakhs of rupees, has been sent to judicial custody till June 12.
Mafatlal, who was on Sunday detained upon arrival at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport, has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Customs Act and will be produced before a Magistrate's court.
The Customs officials have intercepted the noted socialite at the airport on specific information and recovered undisclosed jewellery estimated to be between Rs 53 lakh and one crore from her bag.
Arrested under the Customs Act, Sheetal's bail plea will be heard on Tuesday. She was caught at the Mumbai airport on Saturday night carrying jewellery worth Rs 83 lakh, but had declared only Rs 30 lakhs.
Sheetal is married to Atulya Mafatlal, heir to one of India's oldest business houses.
