Shimla:
With summer rush of tourists picking up and water supply shrinking, the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to resort to rationing of water by making it available on alternate days to ensure equitable distribution of water.
"Water would be available on alternate days in rotation to the people and Irrigation and Water Supply department, supplying water to SMC, has informed that there has been a steep fall in availability of water at main sources at Gumma and Ashwani Khud and the situation could worsen if there are no rains in the next two-three days", Municipal Engineer Vijay Gupta said.
The Irrigation and Public Health department is supplying 34 MLD of water against requirement of 38 MLD but in view of impending crisis due to continued dry spell and problem of low voltage at Giri scheme, the pumping of water has been affected, he added.
So far, the SMC is supplying water once a day but several areas are not getting regular water supply.
With rationing of water, all residences would get supply of water on the third day.
