Shivraj Singh Chouhan tips Rahul to become a minister

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, like his Bihar counterpart, too has a word of advice for Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

"It would be better for him (Rahul) if he heads Tribal Ministry and works for the welfare of people instead of just visiting them," Chouhan, who will become the first non- Congress chief minister of Madhya Pradesh to complete five years in power on Monday, told PTI today.

Chouhan was responding to a question on the advice given by Nitish Kumar to Rahul during the poll campaigning -- instead of giving lectures on development in Bihar, the Congress leader should first become a CM to learn what governance is all about before aspiring to be prime minister.

"Normally, I don't comment on an individual. But merely visiting a few houses will not serve any purpose. Head the Tribal Welfare Department to ensure welfare of people. And you can do that as the government is in your hands," the BJP leader said in an apparent reference to Rahul's visits to Dalit localities and tribals.

"Merely saying that there is an India and a Bharat, or a rich India and a poor India, will not serve any purpose. This is a time to act and not just speak."

On the issue of persons rising in politics on the basis of their family background, Chouhan said there is no harm in giving chance to such people.

"But the tradition of giving the highest post to a person just because you are born in a particular family is not a practical proposition," he said
