New Delhi: In a disturbing video that has emerged amid a rash of racist attacks on Africans in Greater Noida near Delhi, a man is kicked, punched and beaten with steel dustbins by a large group at a mall.
The footage, apparently filmed on a mobile phone at the Ansal Plaza in Greater Noida, has been posted on Facebook by the Association of African Students in India.
"We kept crying for help, but no one came, not even the security marshals. I was running but they followed me and attacked me," Enduranca Amalawa, 21, told NDTV. His brother Precious Amalawa, not seen in the video, locked himself inside a trial room but the attackers broke down the door and hit him with sharp objects. A third man, their friend named Chkwoma Igboamalo, was chased and beaten on the road.
Enduranca Amalawa, an economics student at a local university, is seen in the footage curled up on the floor, trying to block repeated blows from the mob, which thrashes him with a table, stools, bins, covers and whatever the attackers can grab.
After at least three reported incidents targeting African nationals, senior police officer Dharmendra Kumar told NDTV that security has been provided at hostels and colleges. Many African students study in universities in Greater Noida, a township right next door to the capital.
Ms Swaraj spoke with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who, she said, has promised a "fair and impartial" investigation.
The Nigerians were left bleeding on the road after an attack by a group that was marching in protest against the death of a Class 12 student, Manish Khari, who is believed to have died of a drug overdose. The attackers alleged that Nigerians in the area are a bad influence because of drugs.
