Shoe attack on Chidambaram hits Tytler

Shoe attack on Chidambaram hits Tytler
New Delhi:

It seems the anger among Sikhs could be back to haunt the Congress and controversial Congress candidate Jagdish Tytler might not contest these elections after all.

On Tuesday, the Home Minister had a shoe thrown at him by a Sikh journalist Jarnail Singh during a briefing at the Congress HQ in New Delhi.

Jarnail asked repeated questions on Tytler walking free and despite Chidambaram's repeated responses, he lost his cool and attacked the Home Minister. While the Home Minister was untouched, it seems the attack did far more damage to Tytler.

Tytler was accused by the Nanavati Commission, probing the 1984 riots, as having a "very probable" hand in organising attacks on Sikhs, but got a clean chit from the CBI last week. The CBI had taken up the case in October 2005.

The shoe may have missed, but Jarnail Singh ensured his statements on Tytler didn't go unnoticed.

The journalist, who is the defence reporter for the Dainik Jagran was taken into custody. But a unflappable Home Minister said he forgave his attacker. In fact Jarnail was released almost immediately.

The shoe thrower apologised was his actions but insisted that it was for a just cause.

They say inspiration comes in many forms. In this case though the Iraqi journalist, who threw a shoe at the then US President George Bush, has been sentenced to Jail for three years.
