The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has secured a second term in the state, according to the assembly election results. SKM has won 31 out of the 32 seats, while the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has secured one. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had contested the 2019 elections in an alliance with SKM, is not leading on any seats in the state.
A party or alliance needs to cross the 16 mark to form the government.
Prem Singh Tamang, the incumbent Chief Minister of Sikkim and leader of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has won the elections from the Rhenock Assembly seat. Mr Tamang defeated Som Nath Poudyal by over 7,000 votes.
After the landslide win, Mr Tamang congratulated the party supporters and the voters of Sikkim.
"It is because of the love and trust of the people which we have managed to secure in the past five years in government. Besides, party cadres worked very hard. Now we have the next five years to give our 100 per cent for the people of Sikkim," he said at a gathering in Paljor Stadium in Gangtok.
In 2019, the SKM had won 17 seats and unseated the Sikkim Democratic Front party (SDF) which ruled the state for 25 years in a row.
