Chinsurah: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said that farmers in Singur will get possession of land after Durga Puja festival which begins next week.

"After Durga Puja all land owners will get their land back. It will be fit for agriculture," Ms Banerjee said after an administrative review meeting in Hooghly district. She said she was happy to be a part of the fight of the farmers who had opposed sale of their lands to car making giant Tata Motors.

State minister Partha Chatterjee said that the Mamata Banerjee government was not against industries, but was against having factories built on arable land in the state.

"We were never against the Tatas. We told them you can make the factory on the other side," he said.

According to him, 1768 land owners have so far received cheques from the government while 10747 'parchas' (land deeds) have been distributed so far.
