Situation in J&K Conducive for Polls, Says Election Commission Report: Sources

The ruling National Conference had said the polls should be deferred because of the recent floods.

Srinagar: The situation in Jammu and Kashmir is conducive for polls, an Election Commission official's report says, according to sources.

The Election Commission is likely to take a final call after visiting the state tomorrow.

Sources say state officials have told Deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi that the polls do not have to be deferred beyond December.

The ruling National Conference had said the polls should be deferred to next year, because of the recent floods that devastated large parts of the state.

A new government has to be in place in the state before January 19, when the six-year term of the assembly ends.
