Ahmedabad: A six-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted with an iron road is fighting to recover from her horrific injuries at a hospital in Ahmedabad. Her story, which has drawn comparisons with the 2012 Delhi gang-rape, moved people across the country and inspired many offers of financial help. But her mother fears that money raised for her treatment could be misused by her alcoholic husband.
The girl is at a ward in the Ahmedabad Civil hospital and is still in shock. Her mother has been distracted by worries that her husband could take away the money given by the state government and NGOs to finance his drinking habit.
"He is in the habit of having alcohol. Some money was given to us by some people, it is with him. He is an alcoholic keeps on fighting. He could misuse this money,'' she told NDTV.
She did not confirm reports that her husband had snatched money from her after a fight in the hospital. But hospital employees say they saw the couple fight, and the father in a drunken state.
When he showed up at the hospital on Friday, he denied taking any money. "I do drink occasionally but use my own money. I didn't take any money from my wife. '' he told NDTV
The child was sexually assaulted on Friday allegedly by a security guard at a construction site on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
The police ruled out rape in their preliminary investigation but said the little girl had been tortured with a four-and-a-half foot iron rod. Her clothes were soaked with blood when she was found.
The 25-year-old accused tried to run away but was caught and thrashed before being turned over to the police. He reportedly told the police that he wanted to get back at the girl's father who works at the same construction site.
