Slumdog kid to move into new Mumbai flat

Mumbai: Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, one of the two impoverished child stars of the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire is all set to formally move into his new home, his relatives said on Saturday.

The makers of the hit movie have bought the new home for 10-year-old Azhar, who was discovered in Mumbai's slums.

He'll move in on Monday, according to his family.

Both Azhar and and his co-star Rubina Ali lost their homes last month when authorities demolished parts of their slum.

The purchase of a 250-square-foot (23-square-metre) one-bedroom apartment for the Azhars was completed last month by the Jai Ho trust set up by the filmmakers to help Azhar and Rubina.

Ownership of the tiny apartment, which cost about $50,000, will be transferred from the trust to Azhar when he turns 18, provided he completes school.

The apartment is located in Santa Cruz West, a suburb of Mumbai just north of the slum where the two children now live.

The trust is now looking for a new home for Rubina. The government has also started the process of giving both children apartments, and the family of Azhar hopes to get both, his mother said last month.

The government apartment being offered to them is in Malvani, on the northern outskirts of Mumbai.
