Sohrabuddin case: Supreme Court asks Gujarat government to submit Amit Shah's call records

Sohrabuddin case: Supreme Court asks Gujarat government to submit Amit Shah's call records
Ahmedabad: Taking strong exception to the Gujarat government for not handing over the CDs that contains call records of Amit Shah and suspended IPS officer DG Vanjara, the Supreme Court directed the Narendra Modi government to Submit the CDs by Wednesday.

The Supreme Court is hearing the CBI plea to cancel Mr Shah's bail and shift the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter trial outside Gujarat.

The Apex Court on Thursday told the Gujarat counsel that, "Almost 10 days of hearing in this case is on. Still you are not sure of the fact about the CDs. It is very disappointing and serious."

These observations came when the Gujarat counsel told the court that he would check up about the CDs.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) came in for equal criticism from the Apex Court. The court asked the CBI, " It appears that the CDs were withheld by the state on the pretext that it belongs to Tulsiram Prajapatji case."

CBI told the court that it will get to the bottom of the case.

The Supreme Court said, "this is the reason why this court handed over this case to CBI. But the performance of the CBI..."

The issue of CDs was raised by amicus curiae Gopal Subramaniam, who is assisting the court in the case. He said that the Gujarat government did not provide the CDs of telephone records and that the state told the CBI that the CDs pertain to another encounter- that of Tulsiram Prakapathi.

Mr Subramanium also accused the CBI not doing its job satisfactorily.

Mr Shah, the former Home Minister of Gujarat, is accused of playing a key role in the fake encounter that led to the death of Sohraubddin Sheikh. Mr Sheikh, a petty criminal was shot dead by the Gujarat police in November 2005. The police originally claimed that he was a terrorist from the Lashkar-e-Taiba.  But investigations suggest that he was shot for trying to blackmail powerful marble traders in neighbouring Rajasthan. They allegedly approached Mr Shah, who was then Home Minister, for help. The CBI contends that Mr Shah ordered Mr Sheikh's assassination.
