There have been more than 25 ceasefire violations by Pakistan in the last month (Representational)
Jammu:
Pakistani troops fired on the military in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Saturday, violating the ceasefire.
Firing from the Pakistani side started around 5 am and continued for about two hours, targeting several Indian positions in the Mendhar sector and also villages close to the Line of Control, police sources said.
Indian forces responded to the strikes, exchanging small arms and mortar shell fire with the Pakistani troops.
Pakistan has violated the 2003 ceasefire over 25 times along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir since the September 29 this year when the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to destroy launch pads or staging areas for terrorists.
Major ceasefire violations took place on 3, 4 and 5 October along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region.
On October 5, Pakistani troops violated ceasefire thrice and resorted to heavy firing and mortar shelling to target several Indian posts and civilian areas in three sectors in Poonch and Rajouri districts, provoking retaliation by the Indian Army.
Last year, 16 civilians were killed and 71 others injured in 405 incidents of cross-border firing by Pakistan.
