An army soldier was killed and another injured during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Thanamandi belt in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district today, officials said, adding that the operation is still underway.
Security forces had launched a search operation in the region today morning following inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area, a police official said.
The search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists opened fire on the forces who retaliated, the official added. In the ensuing encounter, two soldiers were injured.
One of the injured soldier, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Rashtriya Rifles was shifted to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
A terrorist was also killed in the counter, officials informed.
Reports suggest infiltration by at least three terrorist groups in Rajouri district from Pakistan.
Senior Superintendent of Police Rajouri Sheema Nabi Qasba said that the operation was still underway.
"Operation is going on. One terrorist has been killed. It's a fierce gun battle which started this morning" she said.
This is the second encounter between terrorists and security personnel in the region in August this year.
On August 6, two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Thanamandi belt.
