St Alphonsa's church in Delhi's Vasant Kunj was the fifth to be targetted since December.
The Delhi Police need to provide the Christian community with a sense of security, the home ministry told police chief BS Bassi today. It was not only essential to increase security near religious places, it was also important to solve the cases of vandalism at churches and bring the culprits to book, the ministry said.
The Delhi Police is directly under the home ministry. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with Mr Bassi regarding this matter on Friday.
The ministry has directed the police identify whether there is a pattern behind the attacks and also whether they had been carried by a group. The police have also been asked to increase security -- including more CCTV surveillance and personnel -- wherever required.
The ministry had stepped in earlier this month, demanding a report on the status of security at religious places after five churches were targeted in Delhi. The attacks had started in December and the last incident took place on February 1, at a church in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj.
But three days later, the police cracked down on protesting priests and nuns in Delhi, calling the gathering at the Sacred Heart Cathedral "unlawful".
The controversy snowballed, with thousands of churchmen holding protests in Bangalore, claiming the authorities' response to the attacks on minority institutions smacked of religious discrimination.
"The police manhandling of women, children, nuns and priests at the gate of the Sacred Heart Cathedral raises questions whether constitutional guarantees are not applicable to the Christian community," said a statement released by the archbishops after the march.
"A clear pattern of orchestrated attacks is emerging as more and more churches are targeted, vandalised and set on fire," Delhi's Archbishop Anil JT Couto earlier said.
The Delhi Police had claimed that a few of the cases involved robbery. No arrest has been made in any of the cases so far.
