Somnath Bharti, former Delhi Law Minister, has been accused by his wife Lipika Mitra of attempted murder, domestic violence and torture.
New Delhi:
The Aam Aadmi Party's Somnath Bharti has possibly disguised himself, the police said today as they tried to track his movements from town to town in Delhi and its neighbourhood.
Mr Bharti, who is wanted in an attempt to murder case filed by his wife, is behaving like a "common criminal", said senior Delhi Police officer Deepender Pathak.
"He may have changed his appearance. He may be in disguise. We are considering all angles now," Mr Pathak told reporters.
The AAP lawmaker has been changing locations and phones "like a professional" and is even getting help from men with a criminal record, he said. Some of the men with him are from AAP, which should worry party chief Arvind Kejriwal, who had urged Mr Bharti to turn himself in and called him an embarrassment.
Mr Bharti has been dodging the police since Tuesday, when the Delhi High Court rejected his petition for protection from arrest. He has moved the Supreme Court, which will take up his plea only on Monday, prolonging his cat-and-mouse game with the police.
The former Delhi law minister, who is also a lawyer, has been accused by his wife Lipika Mitra of attempted murder, domestic violence and torture.
He was last believed to be in Agra in Uttar Pradesh. He is now moving between Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, say the police, based on mobile phone signals.
The trail began from east Delhi on Wednesday evening. This morning, his mobile phone was found active near Haryana.
The AAP lawmaker may be missing but he is all over social media.
"Laut Aao Somu (Come back Somu)" was among the trending topics on twitter this morning.
The hashtag was used to take digs at both Mr Bharti and his party chief Arvind Kejriwal, who urged him to surrender in a sharp tweet on Tuesday which said that the lawmaker had become an embarrassment to the party and his family.
