Jangipur (West Bengal):
For the first time in eight years, Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee shared the stage in West Bengal to fire a volley of charges against the Left Front.
Sonia hit where it hurt most. Citing Nandigram and Singur, she said those who called themselves champions of the poor had victimised the poor farmers in those two places.
"In this democracy, in the name of democracy, they are running a dictatorship," she said.
In Jangipur to campaign for Pranab Mukherjee, Sonia also taunted the Third Front as a bunch of disparate parties coming together in a race for the PM's chair. But it was the dictator label that seems to have riled the Left the most.
"Sonia Gandhi has said whatever she has been briefed about. No one has told her who has killed democracy in West Bengal. Hence, she will only say whatever she has been told to say," Left Front chairman Biman Bose said.
For the Left, almost as irksome as Sonia's charges was the fact that she shared the dais with Mamata Banerjee, signalling a unity between the Congress and the Trinamool that can only cause discomfort to the Left just days before the polls.
